Airwalk Prototype 1 “Vortex”The Nike Jordan 1 basketball shoe proved a big hit among 1980s vert skaters. Allegedly, pro rider Chris Miller liked his Jordans so much that he wore them despite his sponsorship contract with Airwalk - the biggest skate shoe company on the market at the time. Only for contests and other public outings would he slip into his sponsor’s shoes to meet his contract obligations. Finally, Airwalk’s senior designer Lenny Holden took Miller’s input seriously. After a number of brainstorming sessions and a thorough dissection of the shoe’s every feature, the Jordan’s design served as the basic blueprint for the Airwalk Prototype series. Holden added a number of skate-specific twists like ollie padding and extra reinforcement.
